Federal Battery Rebate in Victoria: 2026 Guide (Cheaper Home Batteries Program)

Updated August 2026. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program is the single biggest discount available on a home battery in Victoria — but the rules changed on 1 May 2026, and most of the “30% off” figures you will read online are now out of date. Here is how the program actually works today, and what it is worth on a typical Melbourne install.

What the program is

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a federal discount on the installed cost of a home battery, delivered through small-scale technology certificates (STCs) — the same mechanism behind the solar panel rebate. The discount is applied up front by your installer, so you never claim anything yourself: the price you are quoted is the price after the rebate.

What changed on 1 May 2026

Two things: the certificate rate dropped, and a tiered structure was introduced based on battery size.

• STC factor reduced from 9.3 per kWh at launch (8.4 in early 2026) to 6.8 per kWh.
• Tapering by capacity: the first 14kWh of usable capacity earns 100% of the rate, capacity from 14–28kWh earns 60%, and 28–50kWh earns just 15%.

In practice the discount on a typical household battery is now around 25% of the installed cost, rather than the ~30% the program launched with — and it will keep stepping down each year until the program ends in 2030. If you are weighing up timing, earlier genuinely is cheaper.

What it is worth: a worked example

Take a popular 13.5kWh battery. All of that capacity sits inside the first tier, so it earns the full rate:

• 13.5kWh × 6.8 = about 91 certificates
• At recent market prices of roughly $35–$40 per certificate, that is around $3,200–$3,650 off the installed price

A larger 28kWh system earns 100% on the first 14kWh and 60% on the rest — so bigger batteries still get a meaningful discount, but the per-kWh value falls as you go up in size.

Who is eligible

• The battery must be between 5kWh and 100kWh, on the Clean Energy Council approved product list, and capable of joining a virtual power plant (you do not have to join one — it just has to be capable).
• It must be installed by an accredited installer alongside a new or existing solar system.
• The discount applies per battery installation at a property.

Can you stack it with Victorian rebates?

Yes — the federal battery discount is separate from Solar Victoria’s programs. If you are installing panels at the same time, the Solar Homes panel rebate and interest-free loan apply to the solar side, while the federal program discounts the battery. On a combined solar-plus-battery install, the two together are why quoted prices land so far below the hardware RRP.

Common questions

Is the federal battery rebate still 30%?

No. Since 1 May 2026 the certificate rate is 6.8 per kWh with tapering above 14kWh, which works out to roughly 25% off a typical installed battery. The rate steps down again each year to 2030.

Do I have to join a virtual power plant?

No. The battery must be VPP-capable to qualify, but joining a VPP is optional.

Can I get the rebate if I already have solar panels?

Yes — the program covers batteries added to existing solar systems as well as new solar-plus-battery installs.

How do I claim it?

You don’t — your installer does. The discount is applied to your quote up front and the certificates are handled as part of the installation paperwork.
